"Can you get meaning out of a tattoo? Arguably. If you want to insert ink into your skin as a symbol for something greater than yourself, then maybe you are proving a point to yourself or the rest of the world. But at the end of the day, are you really a happier person? Has this tattoo, for instance, caused you to learn something new about yourself? Has it challenged you? Has it led you to self-growth? Nothing comes out of getting a tattoo. You get a tattoo, and that’s it. You do something productive, though, and you see results. That’s a genuine, satisfying change in life. Not ink."

I find this quite ignorant. Most people that get tattoos have a wonderful, meaningful story or experience that goes along with it. There is a bigger meaning to the artwork they display outwardly to the world. That meaning may remain private, or it may be shared- it's up to the person.

If this thought process is applied to music, then no music would have meaning since the musician hasn't shared their private experiences with the world that is around them. Nor would art be expressive or significant.

And yes, you may have learned something about yourself, simply you don't like needles. Or that you would give up your life for your child. And a tattoo of that child's birth footprint is a reminder to you of the day they were born and nearly died.

As for self-growth, well if you refer to the above instance of a child's footprint, then yes, you have grown as a person. Because you now cherish each day you share with loved ones.

All this in a mere tattoo.....

I rather resent this woman asking rhetorically if my tattoos have "caused [me] to learn something about [my]self" without knowing if she asked actual women with actual tattoos. I'm happy to have a talk with someone about mine and why I have them, but it's a bit pointless if you've already decided you know exactly what I'm thinking.

No. I really don't care what people think about me. I mean, it's hard to demonstrate this on the internet, how much I don't care.
Devils advocate here: Isn't "I don't care what other people think about me" the very mantra of hipstertivity? So, by saying that, and vehemently not acknowledging yourself as a hipster...doesn't that make you a hipster?

Jarvis...always like your writing.....no matter what anyone has to say about the current state of things in the USA, it's tough and seems like the general consensus is to whine and blame someone rather than buckle down and see it through to a better place and time. I'm convinced everyone that votes should take a required civics and economics courses so they can at least speak with a basic understanding of things.

This is so true and sad. I am glad to read about this because I was facing a similar situation two days ago . This new author wrote an excellent book on mannerism ,lifestyle and such . I was really excited . I went to my phone and read a sample of it , it was around 7 dollars cheaper to buy it on itunes than if I had gone to a bookstore. However , I didn't want to buy it on iTunes , I just couldn't. I believe that depending on the person, reading a book can more than just reading it . There is something special about possessing the book itself for me . The cover , the smell it has after years , how fragile the pages gets tells you a story of how many times you have read it . There is something about reading a book at night which differs from reading it from my phone that frizzes as it wants.Even going to bookstores is an experience and it sad that it is all going away . Unless we all lose our files one day and realize that we live in a sort of virtual , superficial world there would be no way to fix this . I do buy music from iTunes , really just because it is cheaper . I Do miss seen a great collection of books , CDs and even pictures . This has a deeper message , more than capitalism and such . We live in a selfish world where the distance between the people is growing faster than weed. We promote it and enjoy it . Great article.
