NPR’s Planet Money got a bunch of Economists together and created their perfect candidate. If they could create their Frankenstein’s monster of a World Leader, what would he campaign on? You can listen to the interview here.
The answers ended up being innovative, brave, bold and, in some cases, insane.
-They would get rid of the Mortgage deduction for everyone because it’s too expensive.
-They would end the Health Care deduction that employers get for giving employees health care.
-They would kill the Corporate Income Tax (I disagree with this one, but whatever).
-They would switch from Income Tax, taxing the money you make, to Consumption Tax, taxing the stuff you buy. (So rich people, if they buy less, would be taxed the same as middle income people? But what’s the point of having money if you can’t spend it because it’ll be taxed when you do? Interesting….)
-Tax Carbon Emissions. This would tax everyone based on our carbon foot print.(I SUPER agree with this one).
-Legalize Pot. (I…I don’t even…)
They even made this awesome ad.
These changes would probably make the world a million times better. Also: No one would ever vote for anyone who said any of this stuff. That’s our sad state of politics. We know what we have to do to make our society a better place. No one has the spine to do it though…..
