I’m sure you’ve all seen this by now. If you haven’t, take a gander.
There are two problems with this. Maybe more, but I’m only addressing two. One, this guy is a Representative in the House of Representatives. He is an elected official, running for an even bigger office in the Senate. You can yell and scream about beliefs and the role of government and religion and all that. But, we can all come to a fundamental understanding that there is one type of “rape.” There aren’t “legitimate” rapes and “illegitimate” rapes. Rape can’t be qualified. If can’t be understood. Men have been doing this for centuries. ”Oh, the girl had it coming.” Or, “Oh, she shouldn’t have been dressed like that.” Instead of teaching our sons not to rape, we teach our daughters not to get raped, as if all men are just walking bags of hormones, rampaging through the fields and, if you’re not careful, you’ll get raped by them. That’s not our society.
The second problem is that he even said it. Someone either told him that women can’t get pregnant if they get raped or someone told him to say it. He might believe it. He might not. I think it’s our collective responsibility to point to a person that says something utterly idiotic and say, as loud as we can, “WRONG.” This isn’t political. What he said was dangereous. It was irresponsible. This is 2012. Let’s start acting like we have some common sense.
Thank you!!!
Always Welcome.
